Crushed Optimists

We are twin brothers who grew up in Central Washington. This blog is devoted to the life of Seattle sports fans, as well as various other topics that we will espouse for your enjoyment. We could be called another OFFICIAL SEATTLE SEAHAWKS site, but we'll take our uneducated crack at the Mariners, Sonics, and Huskies as well. A Seattle Sports Blog? Must be the land... of crushed optimism!

Mock Draft Rip Time!!

Because I'm generally cynical about NFL "experts" online (see anything Pete Prisco does), the NFL draft is one of my favorite times of the year. Basically, it's difficult to get drafts as wrong as most experts do (not to mention teams). Therefore I always enjoy grabbing a few mock drafts and "mocking" them before coming out with my one piece of crap prior to the actual draft. Today's winner is ESPN's Insider Todd McShay. I'll have more fun with CBSSportsline later. The needs and pick are from McShay below per team.

1. Houston Texans (2-14)
Top five needs: WR, OT, OG, CB, MLB
The pick: +Reggie Bush, RB, USC

This is a no-brainer pick, although there is a part of me that still leans towards that QB.

2. New Orleans Saints (3-13)
Top five needs: DT, OC, CB, OLB, DE
The pick: Matt Leinart, QB, USC

I doubt that Drew Brees is interested in being in this position yet again. The Saints need so much help in so many other places that if they can't trade down they really should consider Ferguson or Edwards. In other words, drafting Leinart makes absolutely no sense.

3. Tennessee Titans (4-12)
Top five needs: OT, MLB, QB, RB, OC
The pick: +Vince Young, QB, Texas

Steve McNair = mobile quarterback with good arm/subpar accuracy.
Vince Young = mobile quarterback with good arm/subpar accuracy.
Makes sense?

4. New York Jets (4-12)
Top five needs: RB, OT, OLB, QB, OG
The pick: D'Brickashaw Ferguson, OT, Virginia

I'm not going to argue with anyone who picks this man. Good tackles continue to be underrated in my opinion. Anyone understand the importance of Walter Jones to the Hawks?

5. Green Bay Packers (4-12)
Top five needs: OG, OLB, DE, OC, WR
The pick: +Mario Williams, DE, NC State

If I were the Packers, I'd be picking someone who could cover a wide receiver, even if Williams is a freak. Interesting that CB isn't even listed as a "need" here. Maybe they ran out of room. Green Bay should also draft a spine, to deal with King Favre.

6. San Francisco 49ers (4-12)
Top five needs: OLB, CB, FS, DE, MLB
The pick: +Vernon Davis, TE, Maryland

You have got to be kidding me. The LAST thing the 49ers need is a tight end. Don't they have this Eric Johnson guy? You know, one of the top five pass catching tight ends in the league? Anyone remember this? Maybe the 49ers could draft some freaking protection for Alex Smith. Tight End... ridiculous.

7. Oakland Raiders (4-12)
Top five needs: OG, DT, OLB, SS, RB
The pick: A.J. Hawk, OLB, Ohio State

The Raiders need defense... badly. This makes a lot of sense.

8. Buffalo Bills (5-11)
Top five needs: OT, DT, CB, RB, MLB
The pick: +Brodrick Bunkley, DT, Florida State

I have to be honest... I have no idea who this Bunkley guy is other than his name makes me laugh. Generally speaking, that might mean the guy is a reach for a top 10 pick, but these are the Bills who just signed Peerless Price to millions of dollars, so it probably makes a ton of sense.

9. Detroit Lions (5-11)
Top five needs: CB, OLB, ILB, OT, RB
The pick: Michael Huff, DB, Texas

I think the Lions should take a WR.

10. Arizona Cardinals (5-11)
Top five needs: FS, TE, QB, OT, CB
The pick: Jimmy Williams, CB, Virginia Tech

Any pick from Arizona that doesn't include the phrase "offensive lineman" is an awful pick. The Cardinals just spent last year's pick on Antrel Rolle. I think they have a few other needs.

11. St. Louis Rams (6-10)
Top five needs: WLB, DT, CB, OG, OT
The pick: Jay Cutler, QB, Vanderbilt

If Cutler is still around at this point the Rams should take him, because sooner or later Marc Bulger is going to die.

12. Cleveland Browns (6-10)
Top five needs: DE, OLB, WR, CB, NT
The pick: +Haloti Ngata, DT, Oregon

This is a tough one... I like the pick, but I'd probably like a WR better.

13. Baltimore Ravens (6-10)
Top five needs: S, QB, ROT, OG, WR
The pick: +Winston Justice, OT, USC

Perfect pick for the Ravens. Ogden continues to slow down, and when you have a chance to grab a replacement you take it.

14. Philadelphia Eagles (6-10)
Top five needs: OLB, WR, OT, RB, FS
The pick: +Ernie Sims, OLB, Florida State

The Eagles need someone who can put some pressure on opposing QBs. This is an undersized player from an overhyped program... and Chad Greenway is even still on the board at linebacker. Apparently no one likes DEs in this draft, as there are exactly zero taken from here on out.

15. Denver Broncos (13-3)
Pick acquired from the Falcons
Top five needs: WR, TE, RB, OG/OC, DT
The pick: +Chad Jackson, WR, Florida

Man it has to irk Mike Shanahan that he has to think WR since Ashley Lelie continues to be one mediocre player. This is a need pick.

16. Miami Dolphins (9-7)
Top five needs: WR, DC, OT, OG, FS
The pick: +Kamerion Wimbley, DE/OLB, Florida State

Miami needs = offensive linemen

17. Minnesota Vikings (9-7)
Top five needs: MLB, OLB, DC, QB, WR
The pick: Chad Greenway, OLB, Iowa

Yes, exactly, lose ALL your offensive playmakers and then draft a linebacker. No, that's good. Run with that. I do like Greenway, and Minnesota's "D" still blows, but come on.

18. Dallas Cowboys (9-7)
Top five needs: FS, OT, CB, NT, OG
The pick: +Donte Whitner, S, Ohio State

This is where I continue to make fun of pundits who pick the Cowboys to draft defense, going back to last year. Last time I checked, the quarterback is Drew Friggin' Bledsoe. Terry Glenn is the #2 wide receiver. The offensive line is reshuffling again. They couldn't score enough to save their lives last year (but wait! They have T.O! Order is restored!). Just ridiculous... even if another great safety to work with Roy Williams would suck for the rest of the league.

19. San Diego Chargers (9-7)
Top five needs: WR, OT, S, OG, CB
The pick: +Santonio Holmes, WR, Ohio State

Excellent pick. The Chargers desperately need another receiver.

20. Kansas City Chiefs (10-6)
Top five needs: WR, CB, OG, DE, QB
The pick: Tye Hill, CB, Clemson

The Chiefs are in a rough spot. Personally, I would say that when your offensive unit is aging like the 2004 Mariners you should try and replace some talent. Still, when your defense continues to act like a busted sieve you have to look at it as well. A CB though?

21. New England Patriots (10-6)
Top five needs: ILB/OLB, WR, CB, RB, OT
The pick: +Jonathan Joseph, CB, South Carolina

The Patriots do need a corner, but could do better than one with "upside" but only one year of college experience. "Upside" doesn't always translate as well in the NFL as it does in the NBA.

22. Denver Broncos (10-6)
Pick acquired from Redskins
Top five needs: WR, TE, RB, OG/OC, DT
The pick: DeAngelo Williams, RB, Memphis

If LenDale White is still here he should be taken. The Broncos do have Ron Dayne, but White is better than Williams, although not by much, and yes, the workout questions have caused me to back off a bit on my early claims of greatness on the part of White. Still, come on Broncos.

23. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (11-5)
Top five needs: OT, OC, WR, DE, WLB
The pick: Marcus McNeill, OT, Auburn

As usual, I will not argue when a team drafts offensive lineman. They are that important.

24. Cincinnati Bengals (11-5)
Top five needs: TE, DE, CB, MLB, RB/RS
The pick: +Leonard Pope, TE, Georgia

The Bengals got absolutely USED on defense last year, so it would make sense for them to draft a freaking tight end, wouldn't it Todd McShay? Bobby Carpenter and Thomas Howard are still on the board at linebacker. The above would be a borderline retarded selection.

25. New York Giants (11-5)
Top five needs: OLB, WR, DT, OT, RB
The pick: Demeco Ryans, OLB, Alabama

Here's my little math problem for you. If Demeco Ryans < Bobby Carpenter/Thomas Howard, should the Giants draft him? The answer? No. Still, the Giants desperately need a linebacker, preferably one who can actually tackle.

26. Chicago Bears (11-5)
Top five needs: CB, TE, SLB, OT, DT
The pick: +Ashton Youboty, CB, Ohio State

This is a little like the Bengals pick. The Bears defense won all those games last year while the offense resembled something out from my elementary school. Muhsin Muhammed is another year older, there is nothing remotely nearing a legitimate tight end. This pick has to be offense, even if Youboty is good (and if he can guard Steve Smith... cheap shot).

27. Carolina Panthers (11-5)
Top five needs: SLB, TE, RB, OT, MLB
The pick: +LenDale White, RB, USC

The Panthers need a running back... although with players like TE Mercedes Lewis on the board it's difficult to say, but since I have this huge man-crush on White I won't argue too extensively.

28. Jacksonville Jaguars (12-4)
Top five needs: OLB, TE, DE, OG, CB
The pick: Bobby Carpenter, OLB, Ohio State

Do we have to go through this one again? The Jags defense is good, people. It's the offense that blows. I can't believe WR isn't a NEED stated by McShay. The Jags can't do anything legitimate to win games against good teams.

29. New York Jets (4-12)
Pick acquired from Broncos
Top five needs: RB, OT, QB, OG, CB
The pick: +Laurence Maroney, RB, Minnesota

Good pick. Finally. The second half of this draft hasn't exactly been stellar.

30. Indianapolis Colts (14-2)
Top five needs: RB, OLB, OG, MLB, CB
The pick: Joseph Addai, RB, LSU

If the Colts don't take a RB, Peyton Manning might be #1 on the RB depth chart... that's my cute way of saying if they don't take a RB I'll buy the five readers on this site a taco.

31. Seattle Seahawks (13-3)
Top five needs: CB, FS, WR, TE, OG
The pick: +Antonio Cromartie, CB, Florida State

Hopefully we have Ty Law at this point and don't need a CB as badly. Personally, I can't believe DE isn't listed as a need. We have Grant Wistrom, Bryce Fisher, and who? Who???????? Again, Cromartie has good "upside". I'd prefer someone with "talent" and "experience" who can help us win a Super Bowl "next year".

32. Pittsburgh Steelers (11-5)
Top five needs: WR, DE, S, OC/OG, ILB
The pick: Sinorice Moss, WR, Miami

When your current #2 receiver is Cedrick Wilson, it's time to look to the draft for help. I'd also look at someone for that overrated offensive line here too.

Well, that's that campers for mock(ing) draft #1. I'll be doing a few more before draft day (including my own where you're welcome to comment and trash it).
