Crushed Optimists

We are twin brothers who grew up in Central Washington. This blog is devoted to the life of Seattle sports fans, as well as various other topics that we will espouse for your enjoyment. We could be called another OFFICIAL SEATTLE SEAHAWKS site, but we'll take our uneducated crack at the Mariners, Sonics, and Huskies as well. A Seattle Sports Blog? Must be the land... of crushed optimism!

Michael Morse: Worth It?

So.... here's a question. You bring up a rookie who has a wonderful physique, great athleticism, and good hitting instincts. He immediately starts hitting .395 in 13 games, with 3 RBI's and a home run. He is hitting the ball to all fields while flashing power potential. He makes the bottom of the lineup instantly better, providing real punch in what used to be a punchless position (the inestimable Wilson Valdez).

Things are great, right? This kid should be penciled in for the next ten years, right?

Well, no.

Here's the flip side. The kid makes, on estimate, at least two absoutely bone-headed plays per game, whether it is being picked off at first, thrown out while trying to steal second by a good ten feet, or uncorking wild throws to first from the shortstop position. In fact, his defense has been absolutely sub-par, causing this fan to wonder how long he has played the position.

Question: What does one do with the enigma that is Michael Morse? Let's face it, the M's shortstops have reeked the past two years since Guillen (who is on the DL, by the way) left. Is he worth it?
